Smarthome - Smart LED Light Chains - Which one can use?

Introduction

both at Christmas time and some festive occasions, often the light chains are unpacked. On the market currently a whole range of normal and smart light chains. The the best start already at some Euros and then it is how also like to see up to just over 150€.

In this paper, I would like to deal with some solutions I try for myself have. Products are divided into different product cost classes and accordingly have different features.

For me there are currently:

First of all, let's say that all these light chains, for what they do at The end is not necessarily favorable. All listed products are Smart and at the end of the day quite understand as “luxury article”. The best light chains that can change colors (with e.g. one Remote control) cost under 30€ for the same number of LEDs (e.g. here). Accordingly, this contribution is less concerned with costs/benefits Question as this cannot be asked in the type of product, since each of these products addresses another user environment. In this I can see how far the different products are technically distinguish and in what application the one or other product indented.

Twinkly Smart Light Chain

The Twinkly Light Chain is currently in multiple versions sold. Differences between the Lighting possibilities. There are currently:

  • RGB Light Chain, this has built up RGB LED’s
  • RGB+WW Light Chainthis light chain has both the RGB LED’s and separate Warm white LEDs installed to achieve more natural white tones (even in warm white, a noticeably different atmosphere arises than if the light is mixed together)
  • WW Light Chain This Light Chain Has No Builders RGB LED’s but can only image the white spectrum (warm white to cold white).

However, all these lighter chains have the same user interface excl. the color control.
Especially at the Twinkly Light Chain is the opportunity to help the LEDs locating smartphones and based on the construction adapted to create effects. This feature does not offer any of the other Light chains and allows some cool games.

The software is with all common Smarthome standards, such as Apple HomeKit, Alexa and Google compatible and can be controlled with these ,. The functions for dynamic addressing the tree, must However, it is necessary to carry out the app. Other the possibility to illuminate the tree can also other Twinkly lighting solutions are integrated and synchronized.

Communication takes place via WiFi and Bluetooth and is therefore for each person can easily be configured and easily accessible usable. Standard features such as static colors, color control with Music and Outdoor Certification according to IP44 are available and will be provided by I don't think so.

For me, this product is in any case an interesting approach for lighting as I scan the illuminated object (it doesn't have to be a tree...) simply on the object and its shape can create tailored effects and animations. I can't believe however, that local interfaces such as ZigBee are missing and only Bluetooth available. Furthermore, it is possible to use the light chain with Razer to connect chroma or omen devices if they are connected to the respective API are compatible. Last I can do this product without big problems integrate into my Home Assistant installation, as for Twinkly own integration exists. However, it is a pity that these are only the device can turn on and off as well as control the brightness. Effects can only be changed by cloud application because the effects are not be stored locally.

There are also Twinkly A Silicone Cap Set (Twinkly MiniCaps), which makes the lighter chain look less for christmas and can then also be suspended all year round. These are Taste a little expensive, but you only buy it once.

Philips Hue Festiva

The Philips Hue Festiva is in my view the most expensive. However also the only one that is theoretically complete local use enabled as the ZigBee light chain supports. However, it is a pity that the effects here are only in the Hue app can be changed/adjusted. Therefore, a corresponding stroke mandatory if the individualized effects are used what I find a little shame.

Video of the Philips Hue Festiva

Here again the standard features like Music synchronization, voice control etc. However, what is mentioned separately should be able to include other Hue products, therefore, for example, the ambient illumination of a television can also be Tree to be produced. However, this is only useful if the Linear around the tree, otherwise you get weird Color breaks that destroy the image. Furthermore, up to 5 Set segments with a gradient. Total Philips light chain in relation to the price called and the Light chain of Twinkly. In Twinkly there are more possibilities for my application less money. The advantage of the Huw solution that also, for example, Hue switches can be used to switch the tree to dimming and on/off, is not applicable to me as I control everything with my Home Assistant and is therefore not dependent on manufacturer connections. Furthermore, the Philips Hue Festiva currently contains only 3 effects (Candle, Fireplace and Sparkle). At a 160€ light chain, expect I have a little more, as these effects are most likely because I don't have new own effects every day would like to consider, but rather to the prefabricated, if necessary.
Last post the light chain is also only IP20 certified, which is why it is only in Interior can be used, which is incomprehensible for me.

In summary, I can say that I am the Twinkly Light chain that prefers Philip's light chain. Lastly you can Twinkly light chain with help the also make articles “suitable for everyday use”.

DotWay Light Chain

Lastly, the cheapest light chain remains. To my review this, the expensive competitor in almost nothing, when it comes to static possibilities. Zones can also be created here, be dimmed, etc. However, this chain of light does not even cost half of the two competitors. The DotWay light chain can also via Alexa, Google, etc. and connects via WLAN with the manufacturer's servers. Unlike the Philips Festiva 11 effects, which, in my opinion, also could be used realistically. In addition, Possibility of music synchronization. Videos of the light chain can be on the Link to be looked after.
Here is of course the disadvantage that this light chain is not native in Home Assistant or other platforms can be integrated. However, the possibility to stub the light chain via API and then Finally, use in Homeassistant.
Other than Philips light chain is also suitable for outdoor use and has an integrated timer or Time switch. Otherwise there is for me not to say much more about this chain of lights. The technology is more or less the same for the 3 products, only the software really differs.

Conclusion

For me, Twinkly Light Chainthe best of the smart variants. Here the entire Object scanned and dynamically illuminated / controlled. None other light chains supports this feature. Furthermore, Light chain can be integrated natively in Homeassistant. Too bad is that no completely local control is possible. It is of course Ask how far these features are really used. If really wants an individual illuminated tree, is the Twinkly Light chain in any case the best choice, however, if it only around the Lighting goes on, with the possibility of using Smart Home Taxes, then I would for the Cheapest alternativedecide. In my case it will probably be the cheapest become alternatives that I modify with my own software to prevent communication to the manufacturer and possibly some own To use features. I personally see for the Philips Festiva no application if the manufacturer's environment is not important. If mainly Hue products are used in the house, this may Light chain be the best choice in puncto integrability, but on functional level, the Twinkly light chain is the best.

In the end, you have to decide whether the scan function and the accompanying individualizableness of each objkect, which one decorated, reflecting the value of the chain or whether it is at the end only a cool feature that you try out at the end to use only uni-colours or predefined effects.

In my case, the latter applies, precisely because I have no other Column or other 3D-onjects in my apartment where a scan possible. If I want to use the chain for everyday life would, then this would be straight or always visible. This makes the scan function with me if only for Christmas, and for that it is the money is not worth. If, however, someone is a column, a railing or sosnest to decorate where the light chain sometimes does not visible is, then the Twinkly would always be a good choice.
